In 1984 and with 50 Deutschmarks pocket money Carsten Borgmeier embarked on the rise of his empire. His career started at the early age of 15 during a school exchange in England, where he discovered the world of computer and video games at the family home, in which he was staying. He developed a passion for these new virtual worlds und instinctively knew that these games would not only catch on in the British Isles. As soon as the idea arrived in Germany, then it was clear that recreational pastimes were to change and an enormous market would emerge. Borgmeier enjoyed reading games magazines, such as the since discontinued magazine “Computer & Video Games”. As soon as a short while later the first specialist games magazine Aktueller Software Markt (ASM) appeared and he read an advertisement that they were looking for freelancers, he called them and applied for a job as games tester. From then onwards he wrote columns and test reports and managed to quadruple his scanty pocket money. The general public interest in the subject “Games” grew rapidly and he was able to establish good contacts to the games industry. He soon began writing reports as freelancer for other publications, which frequently had problems with their circulation figures. In many cases the editors were just simply too old for the young target readers. The young man from Delmenhorst was soon known in the branch as the “perky young pup” with a passion for games. In the following years the games guru wrote more than a hundred solution books, developed and established TV shows, supplied 140 newspapers and magazines with themes on computer games and test reports for a variety of publishers. At the time in the early Nineties he employed five members of staff in his editorial office.
